Why Strength Training Doesn't Lead to Weight Loss

 

To lose weight efficiently through dieting, as you know, the fundamental principle is to prioritize increasing basal metabolism, which accounts for 70% of the body's energy expenditure.

To increase basal metabolism, you must increase muscle mass. This is because muscle tissue is what burns fat in the body.

In other words, efficient weight loss dieting requires increasing muscle mass.


Strength Training Doesn't Lead to Weight Loss Diet


Since "Diet = Increase Muscle," it's a natural conclusion that "Diet = Strength Training."

However,

I'm doing strength training but not losing weight at all...
I'm working hard on strength training but can't diet...

It's also true that many people don't lose weight despite doing strength training.

There are various reasons for this, but first, there are different types of strength training, and this is often misunderstood not only by the general public but even by experts called trainers and personal trainers.

Representative cases are "strength training for sports/athletic performance improvement" and "strength training for diet/body shaping purposes." Generally, "strength enhancement" and "strength improvement" for sports and athletic performance aim to "increase strength without muscle hypertrophy or weight gain." The purpose of muscle training (strength training) for diet and body shaping is muscle hypertrophy. When muscles hypertrophy, strength also increases proportionally to the increase in muscle cross-sectional area. However, when considering from a diet perspective, the difference in nature between "strength" and "muscle mass" is often not clearly recognized, or even when recognized, it's not completely distinguished and applied to actual training.

In other words, simply moving muscles is not enough. From an outside perspective, if you're using muscles, it looks like strength training, and all strength training appears the same, which is problematic.
